Edlanete, Hau, Tansi, Anin, Hello.
As spring brings renewal for many, it has also brought hardship for several Northern communities facing the threat of wildfires.
The SFNWA Board and staff extend our heartfelt prayers to all those who have been displaced. We stand in solidarity with the evacuees and hope they find safety, comfort, and strength as their communities face these ongoing challenges.

Registration for our third annual SFNWA Conference and Trade Show is now open. We are looking forward to connecting with our members on the bank of the South Saskatchewan River at the Delta Bessborough in Saskatoon, September 22-25.
SFNWA has proudly launched a unique Class 1 certification program, designed to meet the specific needs of First Nations water systems. In partnership with SITAG, we’re delivering hands-on training, cultural support, and real-world placements to equip new operators with the skills and experience they need to thrive.
Additionally, I’m pleased to share that we’ve welcomed two new staff members to our team in the office. Their contributions and insights will be invaluable as we continue to grow and strengthen our organization.
Wishing you and your loved ones all the best—stay safe, and stay tuned for more updates!

2025 Spring Water Ceremony
|
|
On May 29, the Saskatchewan First Nations Water Association hosted a Water Ceremony along the banks of the South Saskatchewan River in Saskatoon. The event was held to honour the spirit of the water and create space for the sharing of traditional First Nations water teachings.
Throughout the day, approximately 100 people gathered with the SFNWA board and staff to listen and learn from respected Knowledge Keeper Norma Rabbitskin and Water Bundle Carrier, Josephine Wichihin. Their powerful teachings reminded all in attendance of the sacred relationship between water, land, and community and the importance of honouring the water to restore balance in oneself, our families and communities, and the environment.

Leveling Up Operator Training: Exciting New Partnership between SFNWA & SITAG
|
|
The SFNWA has developed Class 1 operator training for water treatment, water distribution, wastewater treatment, and wastewater distribution. The curriculum and content were created in consultation with the SFNWA Circuit Rider Trainer Working Group to reflect the unique systems and requirements of First Nations water operations. Each program is 2-3 weeks in length and incorporates site visits to both nation and municipal systems, hands-on training, and more interactive means of educating participants. Oral exams will also be available upon request.
The SFNWA has partnered with the Saskatchewan Indian Training Assessment Group, Inc. (SITAG) to offer an incredible opportunity for this unique operator training program for First Nations in Saskatchewan. SITAG is a non-profit organization with a network of 39 First Nations Employment Agencies across Saskatchewan. It is an institute of the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN) and governed by appointed directors representing all 74 nations in Saskatchewan. SITAG was successful in its proposal to Indigenous Services Canada, which was guided by a SITAG advisory committee, a needs analysis, and a survey regarding the staffing of water treatment systems.
SITAG has contracted SFNWA to provide training for two cohorts of future operators with all four exams and all required safety tickets/certification. Through its network, SITAG provides wrap-around support for participants, including accommodations, meal per diems, travel costs, and a living allowance. Tutors are available for additional instruction and Elders provide cultural support as needed. Following the success of participants in the 9-week program, 13-weeks in total with a one-week break between each course, they will be placed in a First Nations water system to gain their one-year of operating experience needed to complete their certification.
The first cohort began in North Battleford on June 2 and the second will begin in October, in Regina. Registration for the second intake is currently closed but will open up again in July. Space is extremely limited. There is potential for a third cohort of participants in 2026. Please contact us if you are interested in the program or have a placement opportunity for a newly trained First Nations operator!
